An exploration of the maternal bond,

Child's Pose is about a Romanian mother (Luminita Gheorghiu) who will do whatever it takes to keep her son, Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache) by her side. When Barbu faces jail-time, she will do whatever it takes to corrupt, bribe and manipulate the authorities and the people around her to engineer his 'freedom' by her side. As the time line shifts, we see a change in their relationship, the son doing whatever it takes to escape the reach of his mother, is there a balance to be found?
This Romanian-language exploration of the mother-son bond is interesting and occasionally very poignant, inducing introspection in viewer. It won the Golden Bear at the 63rd Berlin International film festival. At points I did feel that the story was progressing a bit too slowly to hold my attention and subtitles that require a fair bit of reading meaning you are missing the emotions and details on screen. This is not to say the subtitles detract but distract as the dialogue encompasses feelings and expression that would benefit from watching the speakers face a bit closer rather than reading. Despite this minor qualm this is an interesting film, if a little slow.
