This review is from: Paradise (Paperback)
Paradise is not a hard book to read, but can be difficult to get into. However, for those who read it through, the result is worthwhile. The setting for the book, Pre-WWI North Africa itself provides for an interesting read. Gurnah presents a new view point from which to examine prejudice and slavery, all the while keeping our interest in the main character. Yusaf grabs the readers sympathies from the start, and holds them until the somewhat unsatisfying end. While parts of the book seemed to drag out, overall I felt that this was a good, worthwhile, read.
