Most of Alejandro Escovedo's new record was co-written with the brilliant yet virtually ignored Chuck Prophet, yes the songs are up there with some of his best but 2 stars are deducted for the production by Tony Visconti. There's too much drum machine and Alejandro has sacrificed his country/roots sound as a result. I'll persevere with this but not happy with the sound.

My first reaction was very similar but its a grower-I think the first two tracks are among the weakest-not a good tactic-but its certainly grown on me-also I saw him live last week when he played most of it and it was much better-as you say without the production.
