This review is from: Shostakovich: Symphony No.4 [Vasily Petrenko] [Naxos: 8.573188] (Audio CD)
I approached this latest in Petrenko's Shostakovich cycle with some trepidation as I was less than enthusiastic over his version of the 7th, especially the lack of vigour and sheer intensity as displayed by the likes of Ancerl and Bernstein and the challenging dynamic range of the recording. Much to my relief, things here are much improved. The performance is exciting and the dynamic range much easier to enjoy - albeit with a somewhat backward percussion section where it needs to be heard at the end of the second movement. I would not entirely agree with the Gramophone (Edward Seckerson) that it is a strong contender for 'the best in catalogue' unless he is referring to the Naxos catalogue alone. In the broader context of the Shostakovich catalogue, my view is that it is a strong contender to be 'one of the best'.
