Electrically, eclectically, ecstatically, emphatically, empirically Skye!,
This review is from: Back To Now (Audio CD)
Skye, like any artist worth the title, has moved on and tried something quite different with this third album. The striking cover design provides a clue. There is a decidedly retro electronic feel, reminiscent of the classier end of the electro-pop trend of the 80s and 90s. Many of the tracks are lighter, frothier, more up-beat than most of her previous solo offerings. However, if you loved the spine-tingling drama of 'Keeping Secrets' and the heartfelt intimacy of 'Mind How You Go', do not be discouraged: This is no throw-away, plastic pop album. There are depths here, too. The supreme quality of song-writing and execution we have come to expect from Skye is undiminished and the range, versatility and mesmeric lustre of her vocals are as captivating as ever. At least as important as all of that, this album also achieves the rare feat of runniing a common and consistent vibe through a truly eclectic selection of songs.
I love Skye's work with Morcheeba but, for me, her solo albums and performances are the outstanding achievements of her career and, as Back to Now has affirmed, are unfaltering in their richness and beauty.
