something very new and very special,
This review is from: TheFutureEmbrace (Audio CD)
For us avid Billy fans (of which there are quite a few!) this album is a welcome sight - and sound - indeed! Billy Corgan stands tall among the 90's alt. rock icons, alongside Trent Reznor and Kurt Cobain, his impact during that decade was undeniable.
Thankfully for us, Billy has continued this trend into our current century. The last we heard from 'the great bald one', was his album with the band Zwan; which saw him in happier spirits than we had previously seen him in. In this new release:
Thefutureembrace, his new found joy in life is still very apparent, though this time mixed in with melancholic influences from 80's British alt. Rock. He make's little attempt to disguise the impact of bands such as Joy Division, New Order (who he played guitar for in 2001), and The Cure (Bob Smith sings on one of the track with Billy), however it is 'Low' era Bowie that shines through as the clearest influence (Billy has in-fact cited Bowie as his favourite artist).
The result of all of this is something much more electronic than his past output, the most rock orientated songs coming in the form of the first single 'Walking in Shade', and 'DIA' (to which pumpkins drummer Chamberlin has leant his skills).
The album is still rich with Billy's beautiful melodies, and, though it needs to be looked for a bit harder, his awesome signature guitar style!!
Don't expect the pumpkins! Expect something beautiful and unique. Expect to be surprised. This album needs to be loved by new and old fans alike!!
