This review is from: The Damned Utd (Paperback)
I'm not a Leeds United fan, nor a Derby County fan, or even a Brian Clough fan; however, this has to be one of the best football books out. Basically, it's the story of Brian Clough's reign as manger of Leeds United after Don Revie had left to take over the English national team. Each chapter represents a day in the life of Clough at Leeds. Some people may find it difficult to get into, but I would advise you to stick with it. The author does a fantastic job of giving the reader an insight into what it was like to be Brian Clough and how he was always going to be the loser in the battle for power at Elland Road. The book flits between life at Leeds and flashbacks to when things were going great at Derby County. It gives a realistic picture of how Clough tried to sign players and what life was like in the dressing room - the cliques and backstabbing etc. The author has done a great job with this as the flashbacks are required to give an idea into what Clough wanted to do at Leeds and how he was thwarted. You also get an insight of how Clough kept turning to alcohol. Overall, an excellent book and definitely much better than some of the rubbish autobiographies from players/managers who have never achieved anything.
