This review is from: Melancholia [DVD] (DVD)Melancholia is a film set at a time when the fictional planet of the same name is visible in the night sky and closing in on Earth at a fast rate.
The film is set in two parts, the first set at the wedding of the film's female protagonist who suffers from a condition of depression and exhaustion, as she tries to face up to the event itself and the eccentricities of her family and colleagues around her.
The second part of the film is set when the planet Melancholia is hugely visible in the sky both day and night and the heroine visits her sister and her sister's husband to stay with them during the planet's closest "flypast" so they can observe it through a telescope. Her sister has been reading internet conspiracies claiming that the planets will collide and life will end, and has become somewhat paranoid about it.
It's a tale as much about a battle with depression as of how a depressed person copes with the possibility of "the end" compared to those who apparently have no mental health issues - as the heroine bathes in the moonlight-like light from the new planet, her sister is becoming ever more stressed about what it may mean for her and her child.
A rich, beautifully made (and of course melancholy) film, definitely worth seeing.
