4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But..., 13 Nov. 2013

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD and the music is excellent, of course. However, I am wrestling with a niggling doubt: did I buy the best version?

According to Amazon the version I bought is 'remastered from the original recording'. However, after my CD arrived I noticed there was another, more recent, version of the soundtrack available, issued in 16 August 2004. This later version seems to have many tracks 'digitally remastered in 2004'. The number and length of tracks are the same, but I'm asking myself if the later version is better in terms of sound quality, and background hiss? The 2004 version is also significantly cheaper at the time of writing. (Any opinions on the relative merits of the two versions would be appreciated.)

I don't own both cd's, in fact I'm in a similar situation, but the iTunes previews for all three digital versions of this soundtrack seems to indicate that this, the 2001 version is the best remaster of the soundtrack. The 2004 one is ironically the weakest, and sounds like just a clean transfer of the Vinyl. The 2011 digital-only version is a remastering of the the 2001 version, but while it seems to sound clearer, its really just louder, and more compressed, and spoilt by distortion problems by "riding the peaks". (Some people may not be able to tell the difference, but 12 years of sound editing puts me at a bit of an unfair advantage.)

Therefore this is the CD i will actually get for myself. So I think you made the right choice. ;)
