5.0 out of 5 stars All That's Good About Classic British Rock Music, 20 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Unleashed (Audio CD)
We British can always hold our heads up very high when it comes to the very high calibre of musicians our small island has produced - The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Free, Black Sabbath, Radiohead, to name but a few but all of them creating different music under the broad umbrella that is rock music.
And what's even better about British rock music is that when you fancy a temporary change from classic albums like "Sgt. Pepper's", "Led Zeppelin IV" or "Wish You Were Here", with a little digging around and a little research, you can usually find some choice little obscure nugget that you didn't know existed.
Leaf Hound's 1970 album "Growers Of Mushroom" is such a nugget - highly collectible on vinyl but recently remastered onto CD, it's a great piece of classic Free/Zep-sounding British rock.
Even better, the original singer Pete French (who by now must be nearing 60), formed a new band under the Leaf Hound name and released this second album in 2006 - and it's a DAMN FINE FOLLOW UP!
Pete's vocal sound young and fresh, a little Paul Rodgers, a little Dave Lee Roth without the American accent, perhaps a little Gary Moore in there also.
The new guys in the band are also excellent, a good bluesy & hard rock rhythm section with shades of Zeppelin and Free crossed with slightly more commercial American hard rock - maybe the merest hint of Ricky Medlocke's Blackfoot.
But on the whole, a great album - there's not a bad track on it, my personal favourites are Barricades, Nickels & Dimes and Too Many Rock n Roll Times.
So if you love good, 70s-based British rock music, get this & their first album "Growers Of Mushroom", you won't be disappointed.
