This is an excellent product.
Some would say a documentary about the moral crusade against extreme cinema in the eighties was unnecessary after the two 'Box of the Banned' box-sets. It is true that much of the data covered in those documentaries is revisited here. However, this particular release scores points over predecessors in being totally comprehensive.
The main documentary is informative and academic, if a little similar to 'Ban the Sadist Videos!' from the Box of the Banned releases. However on two discs 2 and 3, all 79 films from the DPPs 'nasty list' are discussed and critiqued in detail one by one. The corresponding trailer for each film is shown in full. This may sound laborious and dull, but in effect it is informative and slightly addictive. Anyone with an interest in extreme cinema and the history of UK censorship will happily watch all 13 hours and 25 minutes and still hanker for more.
It is hard to think of a more in-depth piece of media dealing with this subject. It may not be ideal viewing for those who are easily offended. Nonetheless `Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide' is an important release that documents the bizarre legal battles and cinematic trends of the seventies and eighties. It leaves no stone unturned.
