Enchanting and unforgettable,

This review is from: The Little White Horse (Paperback)
I first read this when I was about 10-11, and have never forgotten it. I have searched for it on and off for about 4 years now, and finally found it. It is just as enthralling, happy, descriptive and charming as I remembered it to be. (I'm now 27!) Maria is a great heroine, brave and no nonsense with a happy heart. The valley of Silverdew and its inhabitants (human and animal) are utterly beguiling. And the ending when it comes is just so lovely, you can't help being happy. This book was first published in 1946, when the country was still reeling from the effects of war and rationing. I think this is why food is described in such loving detail throughout the book! I get the feeling that this feel-good novel is the children's equivalent of those glorious Hollywood musicals that they produced in the War years, to help aid escapist fantasies. Whatever, it's still a great read that will leave you with a great big grin on your face.
