Different from but every bit as good as their previous releases.,
This review is from: III -French Edition- (Audio CD)
I was blown away by this album on first listen. This really is at least as good as anything else Eths have released. There is a definite evolution and a very different sound (which Eths seem to achieve with every release, whilst keeping the unmistakable "Eths" flavour that fans expect). This time the production is so good that all the instrumentation and vocals can be clearly heard. Candice screams a lot less (which appears to be by creative choice because she still screamed her way through the majority of the live concert I saw on the official release date of this album). Also her clean vocals are very different from before (less classical?); they are far easier to understand and highlight what a good singer she is. Staif (guitarist) also contributes (growlingly) to vocals, adding a masculine voice for I believe the first time since the old EP's. Then the use of the choir and orchestra on some tracks blends really well and is not overly dominating. There is also a lot of variety with songs and yet they are well held together by the overall style and theme (apocalyptic, with lots of biblical references). The running time is just right and the whole affair maintains the interest and holds together much better than their previous album (Tératologie) IMO. On the other hand I'm as yet not convinced that any songs are quite as immediate and powerful in the headbanging sense as the likes of live favourites "Crucifere", "Samantha" or "Bulimiarexia".
BTW If you know any French, avoid the English edition.
As for the bonus edition (I have the fan's boxset) the Madonna cover of "Music" was a pleasant surprise. Think of Cradle of Filth covers (taking a pop song and re-interpreting it to fit their musical style). The bonus disc in the boxset is mostly full of demo versions (like listening to the album again with worse production). But there is one (good) bonus track and the isolated orchestral snippets. The t-shirt is small for a medium so only just fits (maybe I should have expected that and ordered a larger size as this is a French boxset after all!) The Eths rosary and poster were both impressive and it came well packaged in a nice box.
This one is recommended for all fans of metal music. Buy it to see for yourself and then recommend it to your friends. (And I honestly don't work for Season of Mist, stop being so cynical!)
