This review is from: In a Soulful Mood (Audio CD)
This collection of '12 mellow masterpieces', and some reviews, would lead you to believe that this is 'relaxing music', perhaps comparable to Coltrane's album Ballads. However, although there are a number of gorgeously warmly melodic pieces here, there are also a number of more astringent, more challenging pieces.
Among the warmly lyrical pieces are the exquisite opener 'In a Sentimental Mood' (featuring Duke Ellington), the haunting 'Soul Eyes' and Sinatra's old hit 'Nancy', and 'Tunji', a slow blues. However, Coltrane's playing adopts a vinegary, querulous character in 'The Inchworm' and 'I Want to Talk About You'. We also get a more complex 'Naima' than previously, and a great, kicking 'Blues Minor', both with Eric Dolphy providing added heft.
So: not a collection to relax to, unless you're prepared to have that mellow mood shaken up a good deal. Having said that, this is still a fine cross-section of some of Coltrane's more melodic and soulful pieces. If you're uncertain about this, either investigate the ballads album, or the 3CD set Slowtrane. However, if you want some soul and spice in your life for a modest secondhand outlay, don't hesitate.
