A pretty book, but not as useful as I had hoped,

Simple Sewing is very much a book of simple sewing patterns! I think this book is ideal for a beginner who likes quirky designs and doesn't fancy projects that are too taxing. The books begins with a very comprehensive guide to sewing. There is information on things such as what tools you need and how to take measurements. The rest of the book is divided up into chapters based on different styles (boho, natural, vintage, eclectic and whimsy). I am not sure I could always tell the difference between the different styles! There are some nice items in this book, but it is definitely not for everyone. Some of the patterns/styles are quite in your face, although you could obviously change the fabric to suit you. I really liked some of the bags and the wall-hanging, but a lot of the projects were just not for me. There are quite a few projects for children in this book and I don't think that is clear from the cover. The children's projects tend to be quite bright and whimsical. There are also a lot of projects that involve fabric painting which did disappoint me as I am really only interested in sewing. Bear in mind that some of the projects use freezer paper which is not as easy to get in the UK as it is in the US. I think this is a nice book and the seventies-style whimsy will certainly appeal to some. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) there have been many excellent sewing books published in the last couple of years and I don't think this one is as good as some I have seen.
