1.0 out of 5 stars WEP Warning, 1 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Nintendo Handheld Console 3DS XL - Silver/Black (Nintendo 3DS) (Console)
I give this one star simply because Nintendo should no longer be using WEP as a WiFi connection method for its devices.

WEP is NOT secure - it can be hacked within minutes. MAC filtering on WEP is not secure. WiFi protected set-up is not secure. Hiding your router name is not secure. WEP is NOT secure. In fact on page 76 of the operations manual it states that WEP encryption method is "weaker" - this is the biggest understatement ever!

Neither does Nintendo give you the option of connecting an ethernet cable to your DS. This means that to attach your DS to the internet you will have to run WEP on your WiFi router - this therefore puts all of your devices that you have connected to your router under threat such as your PC or laptop. I do not recommend this.

Nintendo should hang their heads in shame on this one - it is disgusting.

The only remedy I have if I want to download games etc is to make sure that the DS is the only device connected to my WiFi router using WEP and then do the downloads as quickly as possible - at a time of day when it is least likely that hackers will be sniffing the air-waves for idiots using WEP connections. Then simply turn off my Wi-Fi.

So why did I buy this DS then? Well cos it is actually very good.

However Nintendo - this is the last time - if you fail to have WPA2 as an encryption method in your future devices then I will not be buying. Ideally you should have an ethernet port built into your devices to allow cable connection.

You can use WPA 2. Are you talking about the right system? This is the 3DS, NOT the 'DS' as you keep calling it. The old DS, yes, it could only use WEP. Except the 3DS is almost four years old now and has always been able to use WPA2. Your one-star review is therefore not only unjust but also incorrect.
