Petrucciani was just 19 when this solo recording was made, but he was already a fully formed, cutting edge improvising pianist. His invention, melodic, harmonic AND rhythmic, is staggering. The 10 minute rendition of Monk's 'Round about midnight' starts with a brittle statement skirting around the theme, before moving through a sequence of what can only be called 'movements'. In classical terms I guess this would be classed as a 'theme and variations', only starting with a variation! I will cut this banter short. Suffice to say the sound quality matches the intensity of the music-making. Perhaps a little too close and reverberant for some, but I was immediately drawn into the acoustic space. This genius died far too young, but my goodness, he left a recorded legacy that few can match.
