5.0 out of 5 stars The history of Traken, 25 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Primeval (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
This is a Fifth Doctor story, when he is travelling with Nyssa. The story takes us right back to the roots of Nyssa's life before the Doctor as the two travel to Traken when Nyssa falls ill. There, the Source, a mysterious emanance which seems to guide the elite of Traken, refuses to be drawn on the good or otherwise of their presence. But the Councillors have made up their own minds.

I always enjoy the Fifth Doctor audio stories. I believe Peter Davison made an excellent Doctor, and his characterisation of the Doctor was always very thoughtful, sensitive and relatable. The tv stories he appeared in, I think, suffered primarily from the companions that he never got a chance to outgrow (and too many companions which made it hard to fit everyone in the time constrained stories). It's a pity that the Fifth Doctor didn't really get a chance to `spread his wings' on the tv series. But in this audio series some of those inhibitions are removed.

Davison's Fifth Doctor is empathetic, kindly and yet decisive. His wry humour and self-deprecation are welcome parts of the character. Nyssa is, as always, analytical and scientific, yet her interactions with the Fifth Doctor are always those of companion and friend. I think they make a good basis for these stories.

This story sits well, and is of particular interest with the ancient history of Traken becoming more available to us. There's lots of back-story for Traken that we never got to see on the tv series, so it is good to see more of this in this format now. It was easy to envisage the world that Nyssa was to know in the future, in its `primeval' stage. And the `bad guys' in this story are well cast, and very well played - there is a real sense of menace from Kwundaar throughout.

Highly recommended.
