A rookie attorney, Leinen, takes on the role of defence lawyer in what looks like a straightforward murder case and soon finds himself in an awkward situation. What unfolds is a searing attack on Germany's legal system. The author is a lawyer himself and this occasionally becomes a little too obvious, particularly when he describes Leinen's attendance at an autopsy, but the front-cover quote, 'A magnificent storyteller' is justified. This is Von Schirach's strongest asset.
My reading of this novella spanned around three unhurried hours, including a sandwich-and-tea break. If you demand that a good read involves a brick-thick paperback, then 'The Collini Case' will leave you feeling short-changed. On the other hand, the writing is of concentrated quality, not padded, dramatic but not histrionic. There are no high tempo car chases, while characterisation is slight but adequate. The cover price of the hardback is, at 12.99, high considering the book's brevity. If it becomes available at under a fiver in another form, it will definitely be worth it.
