3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great., 25 Aug 2013
This review is from: Joe Farrell Quartet (Audio CD)
Over the years I have read various 5 star reviews of this album. My personal rating however is three stars. It is notable that many of the glowing reviews garnered by this album were written at a time when the disc was out of print and only available at a hefty price. The album starts off really well with the John McLaughlin penned 'follow your heart'. this is a real smouldering tour-de-force of a track, which is as good as anything I have ever heard from him. If the rest of the album was up to the same standard it would not only merit 5 stars, it would rank among the best ever jazz albums. Sadly it doesn't. Track 2 'Collage for Polly' is a meandering soundscape with no easily discernable melody. Track 3 'Circle in the Square' is better with some nice soloing from Farrell. On track 4 'Molten Glass' Farrell switches from sax to flute to deliver another good, but not great tune. Next is another short (1.20) flute led tune which again meanders too much for my liking. This is followed by the melodic ballad 'Song of the Wind' which features the piano of Chick Corea weaving in and out of Farrell's flute playing. On the 7th and final track the tempo goes into overdrive to deliver a very fast and excellent example of free jazz, this tune is about as different from the opening track as it is possible to get. Something for everyone? possibly, but I think many listeners will like track one, but will have lost interest before the final piano notes signal the end of the album. The musicianship is terrific throughout as you would expect from these guys, McLoughlin on guitar (track 1 only), Chick Corea on piano, Dave Holland on bass, Jack Dejohnette on drums and of course Farrell himself on soprano and tenor saxes, flute and oboe. At 34 minutes and 3 seconds playing time you may also feel a little short changed. Not the lost classic that some claim it to be, but a decent album which has now been released on CD. If you can get it for a reasonable price, go for it even if just for 'Trust Your Heart'.
