This review is from: Verdi - Requiem (Coro E Orchestra Del Teatro, Von Karajan) [DVD] [NTSC] (DVD)
Apart from the shock of finding Pavarotti unrecognisably slim, I was struck by how unoperatic his performance was. Give him his due, he floats out a delectable Hostias et preces, but the other singers put him into the shade for dramatic effect. Listen to Price singing 'tremens fact sum ego, et timeo' and you can believe in the terror
Unfortunately the camera work is a bit of an ego trip for von Karajan. Do we have to see quite so many shots of him conducting?
It's quite odd these days to see an orchestra with no women. It takes one back to the old days of the fuss and pother over Sabine Meyer and the Berlin Philarmonic
