This review is from: Les Misérables: From Stage to Screen (Hardcover)
This is a lovely book, up to a point.
Having been born and brought up in Portsmouth, and visited the temporary exhibition featuring costumes from the film in Portsmouth Dockyard recently, I bought the book as a souvenir. However, the photos showing the beginning sequence of Valjean and the others hauling the boat into the dock, says this sequence was filmed at CHATHAM, but it was definitely PORTSMOUTH! I know filming took place in both dockyards, but at the very beginning, it was Portsmouth Dockyard! The exhibition gives account of local residents of Portsmouth who were hired as extras, talking about how gruelling it all was to film, and the look on theirs faces of misery and discomfort were very real!
It is only a small point I know, but quite important to me, and disappointing to find in what I said at the beginning, is a rather lovely book.
