5.0 out of 5 stars Almost the end of an era, 19 Nov 2010

This review is from: Poirot - Complete Season 12 [ 2009 ] (DVD)
When David Suchet accepted the role of Hercule Poirot in the late 80's who would have guessed that over 20 years later there would still be books left to film, but with this latest offering of 4 brand new adaptations featuring Suchet's Poirot, we approach the end of an era, with just a handful of titles left including: The Big Four, The Labours of Hercules, Dead Man's Folly, Elephants Can Remember and the infamous Curtain: Poirot's Last Case. With Series 12 we are treated to a Suchet remake of the Oscar Winning 'Murder on the Orient Express', along with the aptly named 'Three Act Tragedy', but the best of this pack is found in 'Halloween Party' with the wonderful Zoe Wannamaker returning as the Authoress Ariadne Oliver, and the brilliant 'The Clocks' which although the screen play deviates significantly from the original book, is the true masterpiece here. Set in Dover rather than Crowdean and filmed on location in Dover and London, the book which featured the claim from Hercule Poirot that he could solve a crime from the comfort of his chair is lost as Suchet's Poirot visits the scene and interviews many of the naighbours of 19 Wilbrahim Crescent. The script includes a wonderfully humourous moment when Poirot asks the Inspector if he may ask a question, which draws the retort "Will you be answering it also!". It may not be vintage Christie, but it feels like it should be. This is by far my favourite recent adaptation of a Christie work and adds much to the simplicity of the original. Enjoy!
