clean and dry floors in no time,
This review is from: Vax Steam Mop S3S+ Upright Hard Floor Advance+ With Detergent (Kitchen & Home)
I live on a farm and we have 3 exceptionally muddy working dogs who live and sleep in the house rather than outside (when they are not rounding up sheep). As a result, my kitchen floor gets very dirty. I also have a 2 year old and a baby who also contribute their fair share of sticky messes. The kitchen floor is tiled in a faux-stone style ceramic tile which has uneven edges and pits in the surface to make it look more stone-like. The salesman assured me the floor would "hide the dirt well" and thus be ideally suited to our kitchen - well yes it does, but it "hides the dirt" by physically holding on to it in all the little crevices around the edges! There is also a more conventional shiny tiled floor in a downstairs shower room, a laminate hallway and an upstairs bathroom with lino that all need regularly mopped. The difficulty I have always had in mopping the floors downstairs is that the house is old and made of stone and the floors are laid on top of bare earth. So they are perpetually quite cold and damp and thus can take hours to dry with conventional mopping, especially in winter.
The primary reason I bought the steam mop was in the hope that it would reduce the amount of time it takes me to get my floors cleaned and therefore perhaps prompt me to do it a bit more often. Realistically, however, the steam mop does not take any less time to mop the floor surface than a conventional mop and bucket. However, with the coral pad (really, I would ignore all the other pads and just buy some coral ones) it gets the floor super clean and the best part it is the floor is entirely dry within 5 minutes of me finishing the mopping. I can have the ground floor hoovered, mopped and dry within half an hour where previously it might have taken 2 hours to be dry. This is a complete revelation! I don't even have to unplug it to do the whole downstairs as the lead is long enough to reach everywhere and it does a very substantial area on one fill of detergent (I find the detergent seems to run out faster than the water)
I have also noticed that with regular use over time, the grout between the tiles and the uneven tile edges are much less grubby than they were with my old mop. Stubborn bits can be blasted with steam and scrubbed out with the brush head very easily. The conventional mop never did this, I had to use a deck scrubber every now and again and it was a true labour of love. The laminate and shiny tile surfaces are streak free every time and it has completely rejuvenated the grubby lino in the bathroom. Overall, I'm very impressed and I'm pleased I bought it. But I would encourage anyone who gets one to bypass the other cleaning pads and go straight for the heavy duty coral ones. With the white microfibre pads I found the cloth got too wet, it left streaks and took much longer to dry .
- It heats up in less than a minute
- It gets the floors really clean and dries in minutes (with coral pad)
- the cable is good and long and the reservoir holds enough water to mop all but the largest of floor areas in one fill (for example I can clean approx 50 square metres and have plenty left in the tank
Some minor criticisms:
- It is quite heavy to push - you do need sturdy forearms!
- The water/detergent canister is also quite stiff to remove and replace.
- The (citrus) detergent doesn't have a particularly strong fragrance and the fragrance doesn't last at all. I'm not sure I'll bother getting any more as I think the steam alone will clean the floor just fine.
In summary, I would recommend this to anyone with a lot of traffic on their hard floors that needs a tough cleaner. But you also need to be quite tough yourself to use it as it does give the forearms a bit of a workout!
