Staring at my shoes?,

Well, I always thought I liked The Cure so I was eager to hear this compilation. It starts well -- all the very early material from Three Imaginary Boys and the compilation Boys Don't Cry are great, but what happens then? Oh Robert, who made you so sad? There follows 7 or 8 of the dullest and most miserable songs over committed to vinyl. However, then comes Lets Go To Bed and everything's good again (Hooray!). It's worth having, if only for Love Cats -- probably the finest song ever to grace a school disco -- The Caterpillar, Boys Don't Cry, In-Between Days and Close To Me, but don't expect miracles from the album. If you like your Cure with a smile (devotees would say that was sacrilege) it might be best to go for Galore. I feel a gap exists for another compilation, for those people who don't own an ankle-length overcoat and would rather stare at the sky than their shoes.
