This review is from: The House at Riverton (Paperback)
This book reads like a 6th former's essay. Or an ITV 'made for TV' afternoon film. A desperate attempt to forceably include every scrap of painstakingly researched information about the period. It is not in the slightest bit engaging, the characters are merely one dimensional devices to propel the most startlingly predictable plot. I'm amazed that so many readers have been beguiled by it . If you want a real atmospheric and convincing feel for this period- I would suggest you read 'Atonement' and just see what a real writer can do. Having said that, at least Kate Morton has written and published a novel whereas I haven't. So good luck to her, but I doubt I'll be reading her next offerings

Thank God for another voice of sanity!

I can't believe the number of 5-star favourable reviews that have been posted for this firelighter. You're absolutely right - it can't hold a candle to 'Atonement' yet clearly aspires to that quality of fiction.

I agree - five stars? I wouldn't give it one. I thought this novel extremely over-rated. It was badly plotted and considering it was written in the first person, there is much that the main character must have overheard, observed etc. She must have spent most of her life eavesdropping. The author based much of her research on Upstairs Downstairs - some of the characters came straight out of Mrs Bridges' kitchen! I read it on a long ferry crossing home, but now wish I'd thrown it overboard at the start of my journey.

i have to agree with your comments about the research - and would also have recommended Atonement for something of this type of genre that is much more compelling.
