Depressing but page turning,
This review is from: The Road (Paperback)
This is a bleak read and one which left me depressed. Being the father of a small boy the senario struck a chord - which is probably what kept me interested - but it was far too sad and at times harrowing. The relationship between father and son is awkward and does not really convince. The detail about the landscape/situation is thought-provoking and the desolation is well described. However, the ending is a cheap cop out - as if the author ran out of ideas. The lack of a formal writing style made the narrative hard to follow at times and was annoying as paragraphs often had to be re-read for sense. Punctuation exists for a reason! I don't understand why this book is so highly acclaimed.
