This review is from: Aenima (Audio CD)
Like Big Black and Fugazi before them, Tool are an American hardcore band who seem to believe that there is something intrinsically impure or cissy about tunes. Their bleak, sincere songs are thus set to music of pared-down, pneumatic directness, flawlessly played but very hard to listen to. They have spent more than three years making this, their second album, and it shows all the requisite signs of overweening ambition: Rush-like prog-rock diversions, expensive production (courtesy of Dave Bottrill, best known for his work with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel) and conceptual segues between songs. These include a baby crying and an extract from a Bill Hicks tape.....
