This review is from: Michael (Audio CD)
I was extremely sceptical about getting this new release from the Michael Jackson estate after all the negativity surrounding it. Is it his voice? Isn't it? Purely a money spinner? More importantly... how is the actual music?
I've no doubt Michael was an extreme perfectionist and if he was still alive there is no doubt these tracks would have been very different. However, as they are they are rather good! I think there is a misconception these songs sound like demos or something, whereas they sound like anything else out there (just not the way Michael may have done them). I think there is a misunderstanding that Sony do not care how much attention goes into how the recordings sound. On the contrary, the production is top quality across the album.
I feel like a lot of time has been spent on the recordings to capture the essence of what people associate Jackson's music with. Without completely mimicking it you'll hear guitars not dissimilar to 'Black and White', the drums as in 'Dangerous', the funk of 'Blood on the Dancefloor', the warmth from 'Girlfriend' and those typical Jackson vocal harmonies. If you like any of Michael's other stuff you will find plenty to like here.
There is clearly a lot of profit in this idea but at least this is something new and not another re-issue or compilation. Sony have access to over 100 unheard recordings so love it or hate it, there are more to come!
