This review is from: Christmas at Thrush Green (Hardcover)
I was so pleased to find a new Miss Read book. While reading it, I was conscious that she had "lost her touch." The characters didn't ring true, some of the situations were downright silly, and the whole effect was disappointing.
It was only after browsing the Amazon site that I realised that Miss Read DIDN'T write the book! And it shows!
If you are a real fan, don't buy this book. Borrow it to find out what happens to Ella, but don't waste your money.

P. R. Scott says:
I'd rather use my own imagination to decide what happens to Ella - I felt her behaviour in this book was overdrawn and not how she would behave in 'real life' (i.e. it didn't match her character in the 'real' Miss Read books)

I agree. all that 'dying for a ciggi' didn't fit at all, unless it was some kind of pun like warning?
