Star Trek: With a Radical Lick of Paint,
This review is from: Star Trek [DVD] (DVD)
Star Trek (why didn't they give this film a more identifiable name?) has a backstory narrative but very forward-looking production values. This is grittier, more edgier and much faster paced than previous outings for the franchise. All this is deliberate, of course, as JJ Abrams shot this with anamorphic technology and used Star Wars as a reference point for viewer expectations.
Overall, it works. Star Trek movies have been known to play about the timeline and they've gone down the same route here - but in spectacular style and with a bold approach to exploring the origins of the original series.
The plot is quite complex and moves at a frenetic pace - but I guess this is all the more reason to watch it several times.
