Sage - For Accountants Only,
This review is from: Instant Accounts 2012 (PC) (CD-ROM)
I started my own business 10 years ago, which is still going strong and I currently employ 5 people.
When I started, all the advice from people such as Business Link et al and most importantly the, 'big', and 'trusted' accountancy firm was, 'get Sage, everybody uses it'.
Well i struggled along for a couple of years, running it in tandem with Sage Payroll, to pay the staff.
What a bloody nightmare this software is! Fine if you're an accountant and have a thorough understanding of accountancy terminology and procedure - If you're just someone, who makes things and wants a simple life, forget it.
Brilliant I'm sure for ICI or BAe but hugely unnecessary and complex for any truly, 'small business'. You buy it to help you and like some Frankensteins monster, you spend all your time trying to use it.
The manuals and help facilites are, again, fine - if you've spent a couple of years learning accountancy.
As I was dissatisfied with the accountant we used, (big bills, little help),I eventually went to a single person accountancy firm. The scales fell from my eyes! Straight away, you could tell that he was embarrassed by the actions,(or inactions), and costs of the Big and Trusted firm and told me to walk away from Sage Accounts. He provided me with an Excel spreadsheet, (easy peasy), which I simply populate as the year goes by. As long as the bank reconciliation is up to date, at the end of the year, the built in formulae, which never change, provide me with all the accounts. I send it to him, he tidies things up, adjusts thresholds etc and thats the accounts of to HMRC for another year. At half the cost of my previous, 'experts'.
Sage Payroll, I still use as, it does the job cleanly and efficiently. I actually wonder if it was designed by a completely different company. Sage telephone support is very, very, good. The downside is the positively usurious charges each year for Payroll Year End, relicensing and mandatory updates.
If you're starting you own business do not be fooled into thinking that you need a big dinosaur of an accounts package, nor that, 'Big and Trusted', accountancy firms will do anything but rip you off.
