One of my favorite films of 2003,
This review is from: The Station Agent [DVD] (DVD)
"The Station Agent" is one of my favorite films from last year. The film focuses on three characters...Fin (Peter Dinklage), Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), and Joe (Bobby Cannavale). Fin moves to an abandoned train station in rural New Jersey after a friend of his passes away. Fin inherits this abandoned train station. As he settles into his new home, his life suddenly is invaded by nosy hot dog vendor Joe and grieving mother Olivia. Fin's first encounter with Olivia was rather hilarious. She nearly runs Fin down with her SUV on the road when he was walking to the station from the local convient store. Not only does Olivia almost runs Fin down once but twice. Fin later meets Joe when Joe parks his hot dog truck outside his station. At first Fin is annoyed that his privacy had been invaded but eventually he learns to tolerate Joe. Joe on the other hand is the complete opposite of Fin (who is a loner), very gregarious and social. Olivia later introduces Fin when she stops by his home with a bottle of whiskey. When she receives a call from her estranged husband during the visit, it is revealed that she has a not of emotional issues to sort out. Fin begrudgingly learns to accept his new friends and over time appreciates their companionship.
"The Station Agent" is one of my personal favorite films from 2003. Patricia Clarkson really shines through in this film as the troubled Olivia. Her performance was definitely worth the recognition that it received in '03 as well as this year from critics. Peter Dinklage was equally good. He made me forget that he is not tall like most people but rather a small person. I was pleasantly surprised by Bobby Cannavale's performance. His comedic role as the lonely Joe was excellent. I didn't care much for him in the tv series "Third Watch" but as a film actor, he really showed potential in this film.
My only flaws with this film is that I didn't see enough of Michelle Williams' character and a possible relationship with Fin, and the abrupt ending. I thought the ending of the film was abrupt but maybe that was for the best. The flaws are minor though. I loved this film. It was a good mix of comedy and drama. Truly a gem.
