A Bit of Genius from North Devon,
This review is from: Big Sky (MP3 Download)
These guys recently came to my attention on Twitter purely by chance but they've actually been around for a little while now honing their craft. They released their first single (To Begin Again) about a year ago then a follow-up (Time Will Tell) at the beginning of this month. Both of these tracks also appear on this brilliant debut album that followed at the beginning of this week. If I were to sum it up I'd call it a distillation of everything that was good about 80's electro music with a fair dose of their own more modern style added to the mix to good effect. Going through the album you'll hear nods to bands like Depeche Mode, Talk Talk, Erasure, OMD to name but a few as well as more modern exponents like Delphic. For me, "Crash" and "Big Sky" are the stand-out tracks. I reckon Crash would have made a better single than Time Will Tell but that doesn't mean the latter is in any way a bad track (great Talk Talk-like bridge on it for a start). In fact, for me there isn't a duff track on the album.
It's great to see music like this being played again by a new generation of bands and it's a refreshing change from the usual diet of R&B, X-Factor karaoke nonsense that fills the charts these days. If you're a fan of any of the above-mentioned bands then I'm sure you'll find something here that'll appeal to you. When you're ordering your copy of English Electric or Delta Machine treat yourself to this as well, stick it in your CD player and crank up the volume - you won't regret it.
