Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
With a neat macabre twist on the serial killer fiction that we are usually presented with , James Carol has produced Broken Dolls , where the villain, or the “Unsub” as he is called in the novel , does not kill the unfortunate victims but abducts, tortures then lobotomises the victims. Thus far four young brunette women have been preyed upon and as the perpetrator escalates the fifth casualty is imminent.
Where this novel again gains credit is that even though the novels hero Jefferson Winters is American the abductions are happening in London -in the midst of an atmospheric cold snap .Winter( no pun surely?) has been employed as a freelance consultant by the M.E.T. who are struggling for any leads at all .Hs unique insight ( is it that unique though , given how many times we come across this in crime novels?) could be key to cracking the case.
I must confess before reading this novel I was sceptical as to just how much originality the author could bring to this most tired of genres. Broken Dolls though , is a thoroughly exciting and satisfying read. Winter is a believable protagonist with an interesting back story and his forthright and highly confident decision making drivers the narrative forward at a fair old lick. And even if the plot does occasionally rely too readily on the odd tired old cliché ( the beautiful and ambitious female officer assigned to work with him ) even that is not stretched beyond breaking point.
I read Broken Dolls in no time at all and the news that there are more Jefferson Winter cases on the way is most welcome. This after all is a guy who never stops working. He even solves cases over the phone ! Burn out cannot be far away, but it should be tremendously exhilarating being with Winter as the fuse fizzles out.
