A Sequel That Delivers,
This review is from: Harp Of Winds (Artefacts of Power) (Paperback)
The plot for Harp Of Winds follows immediately on from Aurian, but while there is less action & the Protagonists make very little progress in the quest to rid the world of Evil, a lot of crucial events happen within Harp Of Winds.
We start to see several plot lines & characters from Aurian come together & merge as well as setting up the final two books in the series; Sword Of Flame & Dhiammara.
Despite being a lot slower in pace, Harp Of Winds feels darker & a lot more refined, almost as if Furey had found her groove with the plot & characters in this novel. There is a little less of the pathetic male that seems to exist in Aurian & it makes for a mcuh stronger group of charcters & so a more rounded & complete story.
Several new & ultimately crucial characters to the series are introduced in Harp Of Winds & Furey puts in plenty of effort to properly characterise them before they are 'needed' by the overall plot. Harp Of Winds also features some of my favourite characters of the series.
Once again Furey delivers a highly colourful story. As with Aurian, the plot is simple to understand & follow, but Furey fills it out with her trademark interesting language, well rounded & carefully developed characters. Furey also paints some fantastically vivid locations, beautifully described through clever but easy to follow language that is one of her traits.
As I mention, Harp Of Winds also feels a lot darker, more sinister & perilous than Aurian as, in the classic Good Vs. Evil story, Evil takes hold of the world, making the quest to defeat Evil feel essential, something weak fantasy novels I've read fail to do.
While Harp Of Winds is not the most action packed novel of the series, it does add a huge amount to the series & feels like the all-important scene-setter for the series to start building towards its climax & Harp Of Winds provides the crucial link between the opening novel & the final two books.
Anyone who has enjoyed Aurian will find the immediate continuation satisfying & enjoyable, & ultimately succeeds in leaving the reader eager to continue following the story.
