Metallica's slow motion:- car crash!,
This review is from: St. Anger (Audio CD)
It's quite hard to look at this album objectively being 11 years on. Admittedly, the dust has settled somewhat but it has become apparant that time has not been kinder to this Metallica own goal. St Anger is unquestionably the worst Metallica album released to-date. There are a few semi-gems here, though situated with all the mire around them:- Sweet Amber & The Unnamed Feeling" are the only half-enjoyable tracks of the album. Whilst many of the rest are just simply irritating, such as the critical annoyance of "Frantic, Dirty Window, My World & Purify" arguably all the surefire lowpoints.
The songwriting and musicianship is across the board:- very lazy and uninspired. The garage sound I think they were aiming for, sounds nothing like the results they might have got had they made an album in the same sort of vein as the excellent "I Disappear" single from they're MI2 soundtrack. The choruses and rhythms a-side are uninteresting and excruciatingly repetetive, Lars's apaulling drumming is both "tinny & echo'y" and thunderously ineffective. James spits out alot of venom during his convicted singing, but it isn't enough to save what's here.
Metallica's eye was off the ball here- and this album is still a mess over a decade later. In hindsight, 2 excellent songs are worth the two star rating but without them it would surely be a first class disaster.
