I almost abandoned this book after the first 50 pages because it was so dry. It takes a lot of getting into and is in reality a portrait of just one man - the judge - with his background set against a background of Irish history. It began to pick up pace eventually but about 100 pages in for me and I enjoyed the ending. On the positive side it did leave you thinking about what we all say and don't say. I read it on holiday and am not sure I would have had the patience to persevere at another time - despite Toibin's carefully constructed and atmospheric prose.
