Good commercial books,
This review is from: Spiderwick Chronicles, Cycle 1 (Movie Tie-In Box Set): The Field Guide, the Seeing Stone, Lucinda's Secret, the Ironwood Tree, the Wrath of Mulgarath (The Spiderwick Chronicles) (Hardcover)
My young son enjoys the Spiderwick Chronicles very much. I also enjoy reading these books with him and particularly like the lively way the siblings' relationships are described.
However I would not say that they are well written at all -they are full of Americanisms for one thing. Most of all they are too obviously a good commercial venture: these lavishly published and illustrated books are in fact remarkably short and with very little original material - most of it is imitation and borrowing of other and better sources.
The five original books should really have been published as only one book, but presumably this would be less profitable. Let's not mention all the other stuff that has been published about the films, the observation notebooks and even Arthur's fieldguide. It seems Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi have struck a gold mine.
Buy those books for your children by all means but offer them "The Hobbit" alongside.
