Evocative and Grandiose,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Haunter of the Dark and Other Tales (H. P. Lovecraft Omnibus, Book 3): Haunter of the Dark and Other Tales No. 3 (Paperback)
Reading this, I can see why Lovecraft is so popular! Basically, it's 14 of his short stories -the bulk of his "Cthulu" related stuff, and every one is good and eerie. There are some classics here - 'The Dunwich Horror', 'The Call of Cthulu', the title story, and others. He really does get me imagining, being very evocative and the images he creates in my minds eye stay with me. You can also see how later writers have been influenced by him in some way. I hold from giving this book it's fifth star because sometimes he can be a little shy on description (he sometimes relies rather a lot on the descriptive term 'cyclopean'), and at times he can seem a little silly - see 'The Shadow Out Of Time'. Overall, very good. Now I'm off to read the other two omnibus's!
