Robocop. What a concept. What a movie! Set in a dystopian near future Detroit, where the Police have been privatised and criminality rules the streets. Following from the excellent first film Irwin Kirshner has woven a tale around the iconic half robot/half man cyborg cop that involves a hunt for the producers of a deadly new drug, and the creation of Robocop 2, the OCP's next development in the Robocop programme. It all, as anyone could predict, goes horribly wrong, and it is up to Robocop to clean up the mess left behind by the Corporation.
It's an entertaining film that satirises the corporate `greed is good' attitude of the late `80s, while delivering a straightforward plot as Robocop goes on the hunt for the drug dealers. Filled with plenty of action, some great set pieces, memorable villains and loads of classic quotable lines this is as entertaining a 100 minutes of film as you will see. It suffers a little from a saggy middle section in which Robocop has to deal with the legacy of his human side, and the changes to his programming made by the company. In general, in today's cinematic landscape of `complicated' heroes who are constantly introspecting or walking a line between good and bad i9t's nice to see this sort of old fashioned, simple good vs bad plot line so energetically and stylishly played out. Four stars.
