This review is from: Arctic Wargame (Justin Hall # 1) (Kindle Edition)
Ethan Jones' first full-length novel, this is a thriller set in the world of military intelligence. Justin Hall, our hero, is sent with his team to the Arctic to investigate reports of two unauthorized icebreakers in Canadian territory.
The plot is not as straightforward as it first seems and there are plenty of twists to keep the reader interested. The author allows time for us get to know the main characters, Justin Hall himself, his colleague Carrie who is also his ex-partner in the personal sense and Anna, the newbie on the team. The descriptions of the frozen Arctic are good, giving a real sense of the harshness of the environment and the community who live there, and the author makes sure the location plays a full part in the story. First and foremost, though, this is an action thriller, filled with gun battles, aerial dogfights, heroism and betrayal.
I felt that the plot while quite original was a bit far-fetched and I had to suspend my disbelief a little more than I would have liked. However, I was impressed by the author's writing style and felt that the characterisation was handled well. Justin Hall is a likeable hero whom I'd be happy to meet again.
Overall, I felt this was an enjoyable and very promising first outing for both author and hero and I look forward to seeing how both develop in future novels.
