Brilliant pop meets Drum'n'Bass,
This review is from: Resist (Audio CD)
This debut album from Kosheen is, to be frank, quite wonderful. Drum'n'Bass is what they are considered to be, but just about every track on this album has pop running through it. Hardcore D'n'B fans will probably not find this particularly satisfying, unless they love pop music as well, but many people will. As this album has the remix of "Hide U" that was released as a single, do not expect many of the other songs to be in the same vein. That was a House tune, more or less, and that's not what this album is about. The original version is more representitive of what it's really like.
Certainly, going by the "Hide U" remix, I would never have bought this album. It was a good song, but not enough to convince me. Then, however, came along the absolutely brilliant "Catch" and "Hungry". These are fabulous pop songs with great melodies; definite album highlights, but there's more where that came from. If you loved those two, you really shouldn't be disappointed as many of the tracks are catchy and make you want to dance, with great vocals from Sian. "Face In A Crowd" (which really deserves to be a single) and "Cover" are particularly excellent.
The single "Harder", released soon, gives an indication of the other side of this album. It's a much more chilled, relaxed affair, but no worse for it. The song is simply gorgeous, and there are plenty of others like that, almost haunting in a way. "I Want It All" and the title track, "Resist" are fine examples. Admittedly, a couple tend to drag on a bit and can get repetitive, but this isn't a major or frequent occurence here.
Basically, if you have liked all singles released from "Resist" so far, you can't go wrong. With 15 tracks (16 if you include the intro) it's a truly enjoyable listen.
