Excellent early Joy Division compilation.,
This review is from: Substance (Audio CD)
I still have an original Factory pressing of this CD which was 1 of the first CD's I ever bought in 1988 and still play it sometimes now.
It consists of mostly non-album tracks and has 4 songs from when Joy Division were still known as Warsaw and whilst these tracks are interesting, they sound quite crude compared to the rest of the material. This is particularly noticeable on this CD when a Warsaw track 'No Love Lost' is the next track immediately after the wonderful Love Will Tear Us Apart. Other notable tracks include Dead Souls from the earlier Still album, the EP tracks Digital and Glass and outtakes from Unknown Pleasures such as AutoSuggestion and From Safety To Where? - the last two cuts being as good as anything on that album.
I'd not recommend this as an introduction to Joy Division due to the rarities such as the aforementioned Warsaw tracks, I'd say it's better to start with the 1995 'Permanent' compilation which contains tracks from both their 'official' albums and 2 mixes of Love Will Tear Us Apart, one of which is the rarely-heard version from the Atmosphere CD single.
That's another story though, and I'd not hesitate to recommend Substance as a 2nd. or 3rd. Joy Division purchase.
