5.0 out of 5 stars Finally something worth watching on TV!, 20 Sep 2010
This review is from: Sons of Anarchy - Season 1 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Being a massive fan of 'The Shield', I was eager to see what co-writer Kurt Sutter would do with his next project 'Sons of Anarchy' and I was more than impressed with the end result. The SOA are a motorcycle club based in the US, made up of several charters and organised like any other legitimate club, with President, Vice-President and treasurer. The focus of the show is on one particular charter, SAMCRO, who run a legal auto-repair business by day and an illegal gun-manufacturing operation by night.

No character in 'Sons of Anarchy' is painted in black and white; each character is well drawn out and face their own personal dilemmas and troubled histories. Acting as guardians of their small hometown of Charming, the Sons are always treading a fine line between the moral and immoral, the legal and illegal. The mythology of the biker club in general has been greatly researched and it's clear on the screen that the writers and actors are paying homage rather than exploiting this scoiety.

The overall arc of the series is focused on the troubled relationship between Club President Clay Morrow and Vice President Jackson Teller. Jax is young and he's recently become a father which gives him a huge wake-up call to the dangers of illegal activity and the value of life. Couple this with the fact that Clay is Jax's stepfather and that his late father John Teller was the original founder of the club, then you have a juicy set-up. While each episode gives the club members a problem to overcome (ranging from incriminating evidence to full-on war with rival clubs), Jax learns more about his father's original hopes for the club, much to the dismay of Clay.

Featuring some familiar faces from film and TV, the acting in 'S.O.A' is solid. Charlie Hunnam is both fierce and cool as Jax and Ron Perlman is always good value as the tough, stubborn Clay. Perhaps the stand-out role though is Katey Segal as 'first lady' of the club, who is ruthless in her family values. With Season 2 already on dvd and S3 airing as we speak, there's no better time to check out this fantastic series with brains, and most importantly, balls!
