This review is from: Greek: A History of the Language and Its Speakers (Paperback)
Usually, "exciting" is not the first word that pops to mind when it comes to books about language. This survey of Greek language by a leading authority on the subject certainly deserves it. This is not only because it deals with the fascinating story of a language that has been continuously used and developing for 4,000 years but also because of the excellent idea to present the history of the language as it intertwines with the history of people. This human dimension motivates the many technical details offered in the book which otherwise might be interesting only for experts. Needless to say, the information contained in the book reflects the latest advances in linguistics, literary studies and Greek history.
