Unique talent - universal themes,

This review is from: La Juderia (Audio CD)I hadn't heard of Ladino until stumbling across Yasmin Levy - won't go into the history because you can read it in loads of the other reviews here. Contrary to the claims in some other reviews, the sleeve booklet does not transcribe all the lyrics of each song, just part of each.....& I know just enough Spanish to know that some of the transcription is wrong. And it certainly doesn't offer the full English translation - usually just a couple of lines per song - and again, it's not always accurate.
That said, you don't need to understand the Spanish to enjoy the music, because Levy's voice tells it all. She has an amazing voice & presence and the songs are haunting and heartfelt. My favourites so far - on just a couple of listens - are the more Latin tracks rather than the more traditionally sephardic ones. Stand-out track for me so far is track 5 - the ironically titled La Alegria (Happiness) - LOVE her explanation as to why it's so called.
And I suppose that sums up the appeal of Levy's music - you may not speak her language, but she can make you understand what she's saying by the power and passion of her voice. The themes and emotions are universal; the delivery is unique.
