One of the greatest pop albums I've heard,
This review is from: Tilly and the Wall - O (Audio CD)
I just really, really like their sound on this thirty-five minute album. That sound combined with consistently strong songwriting is a killer combination. There isn't one bad song, or even a weak one on this album.
All the tracks are up-tempo. There are changes of dynamics within them so they aren't too one paced.
1. Tall Tall Grass 2:58 (9 out of 10 stars)
Great lyrics and vocals. I like the way there are different sections by having first a piano and then a screeching guitar dominate.
2. Pot Kettle Black 2:51 (9 out of 10 stars)
A pop-rock belter. As much genuine rock as pop. Has great foot stomping percussion which gives it a large, expansive quality.
3. Cacophony 2:28 (8 out of 10 stars)
The saxophone makes them sound like Roxy Music. A male singer shares the lead with the female vocalist.
4. I Found You 2:37 (8 out of 10 stars)
Very pretty sounding. Includes tap dancing percussion.
5. Alligator Skin 2:20 (8 out of 10 stars)
Another immaculate sounding pop-rock track. The male singer takes the lead with extensive secondary female vocals (not backing vocals). It's a little short with a disappointingly abrupt ending.
6. Chandelier Lake 4:16 (7 out of 10 stars)
Has a slightly more gauzy, ambient sound to it. It's still a clear and direct song. Good, but not as powerful as what has gone before it.
7. Dust Me Off 2:57 (7 out of 10 stars)
The vocals are more prominent than usual with slightly less frenzied instrumental work. Borderline mid-tempo.
8. Falling Without Knowing 3:06 (10 out of 10 stars)
Beautiful sounding song. I particularly like her falsetto(?) style voice.
9. Poor Man's Ice Cream 2:34 (8 out of 10 stars)
The lyrics are obviously random nonsense. Not that it matters as it sounds excellent. It doesn't have much of an ending. I get a sense this song was made up on the spot in the studio. This is as close as the album gets to filler. Other bands can only wish their filler was this good.
10. Blood Flower 3:12 (8 out of 10 stars)
11. Too Excited 3:21 (9 out of 10 stars)
Begins with a tap dancing percussion solo. It continues throughout the rest of the song. First class use of swearing. It's wonderfully angry and manic.
12. Beat Control 2:48 (7 out of 10 stars)
A UK bonus track. It does sound different as the vocals are less produced (reduced echo or reverb?) and the instruments sound more separated. Good song.
I like to make EP playlists out of some albums for my iPod. Tracks 1, 2, 8 and 11 made the cut.
I've been listening to it for three and a half years and it still sounds brilliant. This is one of the greatest pop albums ever released.
Overall 10 out of 10 stars.
If you think I'm the kind of person to throw around high scores like these as usual, then please look at my other reviews. These high ratings are not standard.
