Surprising, but teriffic.,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fabric20: John Digweed (Audio CD)
I ordered this CD as a matter of course. It was JD, and it was Fabric. What is there to think about? Then I received it, looked at the tracklisting and felt a little edgy. How many prospective buyers are reading these reviews thinking "I don't buy John Digweed to hear Martin Solveig"? And you'd be right to be slightly mystified. This CD, as many have pointed out, isn't about JD's trademark dark, unhurried progressive sound, it's about carrying beats and soulful house, and boy does he pull it off.
If it was ever risky for a strictly pigeon-holde pioneer like Digweed to branch out, he's vindicated with this mix. From start to finish the tracks are quality and the mixing likewise. A gentle, prodding intro in the form of Pete Moss's Strive to Live gives way to the mainstay rhythms which dominate this offering. Tracks 4-6 in particular are very strong, with Billy Dalessandro's In the Dark at track 6 the highlights, its infectious beats and incessant motion a real pick of the CD. Superpitcher's Happiness brings things back down later on to a controlled, even dark level, which proves the precursor to a flowing, ambient ending.
The musical prose one can use in these reviews is fine, but at the end of the day this is a superb mix by a superb DJ. If you're used to Digweed and feel somewhat confused by his tracklisting, trust the man and buy it.
