5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable music, well performed, 25 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Stojowski-Piano Concertos Nos 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
The music chosen for the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series consists of well-crafted pieces that lack that spark of memorability -- usually of melodic inspiration -- that we associate with Brahms, Grieg, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky but which are certainly enjoyable to experience in the moment. Here's another that's well worth listening to -- excellent performances in good sound of the two Stojowski piano concertos. The first (1890) has a melancholy feel to its first two movements, while the third is positively rowdy in what I think as a kind of "Polish country fair" manner. The first two movements tend to meander a bit, and the third has a stop-start quality that's noticeable, but it's all pleasant enough, with nice work not only from the soloist, Jonathan Plowright, but also from the orchestra's principal cellist and English horn player. The writing for winds especially is also marked in the second concerto (1920), which seems to me a quite distinguished piece and well worth the occasional revival. It's designated as a "Prologue, Scherzo, and Variations" but it is thematically and expressively unified, with a lovely nobilmente feel to the Prologue that's followed by a lively and charming scherzo, the characters of both of which are recapitulated in the final variation (no. 10), the single longest "movement" in the piece. The Variations section starts with a lovely theme that is developed gently at first, then picks up steam in Variations 5, 6, and 7. Thereafter comes the first of two magical moments -- a transition to a brief andante sostenuto variation of almost Elgarian beauty, the feel of which is continued in the following andantino variation. The second magical moment comes at the very end, after the recapitulation of the nobilmente and scherzo elements, the piece ends raptly with the piano poised against high strings and winds -- a wonderful inspiration. I recommend this disc.
